This is the Peter Iredale. In 1906 with an empty cargo it ran aground on the Oregon Coast here in Astoria on its way to Portland. They encountered a strong southwest storm, and the captain ordered to stand off the mouth of the Columbia River. After midnight that evening, the Peter Iredale was lost in a gust of wind and pushed into surging waves. The ships bottom raked the bottom of the ocean and eventually came to rest in pieces on shore. This is down at Fort Stevens State Park on the beach. This park is part of the northern Oregon Coast. In 1960 other parts of this ship were removed from the coast for safety reasons after being here for 54 years. This is all that is left
